世界的に高い評価を得ている韓国を代表する写真家クー・ボンチャン（具本昌）による展覧会「白磁：White Vessels」を開催いたします。「White Vessels」は、作家が日本民藝館の協力を得て、柳宗悦の収集した白磁コレクションを2006年に撮り下ろしたシリーズです。数百年にわたってつくられてきた長い歴史を持つ白磁は、かつては王朝貴族に愛用され、近代では広く庶民にも親しまれてきた朝鮮文化を代表する陶磁です。その飾り気のない素朴な陶磁は、「用の美」を唱えた柳宗悦をはじめ欧米や日本の民藝運動家たちを魅了し、熱心に収集されてきました。そのため、白磁の面影を偲ぶことができるのは、今となっては主に海外における美術館の収蔵品となっていました。その経緯を知ったクー・ボンチャンは、海外に散逸してしまった母国の遺産を追い求め、美術館やコレクターのもとに赴いては、白磁の持つきめ細やかな肌合いや表情の一つひとつを丹念に自身のカメラに収め、写真作品として残してきました。
本展覧会では「White Vessels」より、アマナサルトが作家とともに厳選し、2015年に新たに制作したプラチナプリント作品13点を展示いたします。作品からは、白磁が湛える歳月を経た独特の質感と、素朴でありながらも繊細な美しさを感じ取ることができます。
クー・ボンチャン（具本昌）は1953年、韓国ソウル生まれ。1975年、延世大学経営学部経営学科卒業（ソウル）。1979年から1985年までドイツのハンブルクに留学、ハンブルク美術大学写真デザインを専攻し、博士号を取得しました。2000年イー・ミョンドン写真賞受賞（韓国）。これまで30回を超える個展を開催しています。主なものにカメラ・オブスキュラ（パリ）、国際画廊（ソウル）、何必館 京都現代美術館、フィラデルフィア美術館などがあります。2015年に森美術館にて開催された「シンプルなかたち」展にも出展。小山登美夫ギャラリーでは、代官山のギャラリーで2007年に個展「Soap」を開催。クーの作品はボストン美術館、サンフランシスコ近代美術館、ヒューストン美術館、何必館 京都現代美術館、国立現代美術館（韓国）、サムスン美術館リウム、その他の美術館や個人コレクションに収蔵されています。

Koo Bohnchang Photo Exhibition “White Vessels”
Tomio Koyama Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of Koo Bohnchang, “White Vessels”. “White Vessels” is a series of photographs of Soetsu Yanagi’s white Korean porcelain collection, captured in 2006. White Korean porcelain vessels, with a long history of hundreds of years, were originally used exclusively by the royal court and later also by the elites, eventually by the public. The beauty in their plain simplicity of these white vessels have fascinated many advocates of the Folk Art movement in Japan including Soetsu Yanagi who actively promoted the “beauty of usage”, as well as collectors from the Western countries. In order to rebuild the collection of home treasures, Koo traveled around the world to visit and capture the spirits of these dispersed vessels at collectors and various museums. He carefully photographed the history and memories contained in these vessels by their delicate texture and details.
This exhibition is consisted of 13 works of “White Vessels” selected and newly printed in platinum and palladium in 2015 by the artist and amanasalto. We strongly encourage you to come and enjoy vessel’s unique texture developed through the passage of time and the delicate beauty in their simplicity.
Born in Seoul, Korea in 1953, Koo graduated from Yonsei University majoring in Business Administration and later studied photography in Hamburg, Germany. His works have been exhibited in over 30 solo exhibitions including Camera Obscura, Paris (2004), Kukje Gallery, Seoul and Kahitsukan Kyoto Museum of Contemporary Art (2006), Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia (2010) and most recently participated in the group exhibition “Simple Forms: Contemplating Beauty” in Mori Art Museum, Tokyo this year in 2015. Koo’s works are collected by Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Kahitsukan Kyoto Museum of Contemporary Art, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul and many other museums and private collections.
